Ćacad Shooter First Look

Protest movements have produced plenty of art over the years — murals, chants, banners, songs — but rarely a shmup. Ćacad Shooter, a free browser game hosted at games.pivnicki.com, is exactly that rarity: a vertical arcade shooter built directly out of Serbia's ongoing student protest movement, skinning a genre that goes back to 1942 with a message that's anything but subtle.

Strip away the context and the mechanics are pure classic arcade. You pilot a ship up through a dark, neon-soaked cityscape, weaving between obstacles and enemy fire, clearing waves before facing down a boss at the end of each level. Nothing here reinvents the vertical shmup, and it isn't trying to. What it does instead is dress the formula up in a costume that only makes sense if you've been following Serbian headlines for the past year or two.

The reskin is where the game earns its identity. Power-ups are indeksi, student IDs that boost your weapon, and diplome, diplomas that function as smart bombs and clear the screen. The enemies aren't generic drones; they're armored grunts branded with a red Cyrillic Ћ, and the game's tagline leaves zero room for ambiguity: Studenti pobeđuju. Students win.

Where the game gets genuinely funny is the boss roster. Five levels, five increasingly unsubtle jabs, each rendered as a proper end-of-level arcade boss portrait. There's a Bedni ćaci-crv to open things up, followed by a Lokalni parazit, a Korumpirano govedo, and a Dr-Ćaci Plagijator whose name alone tells you exactly what kind of academic scandal it's mocking. The gauntlet closes out with Uber Ćaci, presumably the platonic ideal of everything the movement has spent the last year shouting about. None of this is going to land for a player with no context on the protests, and the game clearly isn't losing sleep over that. It knows exactly who it was made for.

It costs nothing, needs no install, and runs the moment you hit Pokreni igru in the browser, which lowers the barrier to entry about as far as it can go. That also means there isn't much standing between curiosity and actually trying it, and for a piece of satire this current, that immediacy is probably the point.

What we can't speak to yet is how it plays over a real session — difficulty curve, whether the five bosses actually escalate in a satisfying way, how the shooting feels once the novelty of the theme wears off. That's going to take actual hands-on time rather than a first look at the marketing page, so consider this a flag rather than a verdict. A full review with a score is coming once we've spent proper time in the cockpit.
